How to Know If Your RV Deal Is Fair

Published by SmartBuyers · July 2026 · 6 min read

Every RV salesperson has a version of the same line: "This is the best price I can do." Sometimes it is true. Usually it is not. Here is a five-step check to know whether the deal in front of you is actually fair.

1. Compare Against National Comps, Not Regional

Dealers love to say "local pricing is different." Sometimes it is — but the gap is rarely more than 3–5%. If your quote is 15% above the national median for the same make, model, year and floorplan, you're being overcharged, not "priced regionally."

2. Look at Out-the-Door, Not Sticker Discount

A $12,000 discount off MSRP means nothing if the dealer added $6,000 in freight, prep, doc, orientation and "prep protection package" fees on the back end. Only the OTD number matters.

3. Check the Financing Terms Separately

Dealers often make more on the loan than the unit. If they push a 15- or 20-year RV loan, the total interest can exceed $40,000 on a $80,000 unit. Get your own financing quote from a credit union before you sign anything at the dealership.

4. Ask About Recent Sales

"What have you sold this exact floorplan for in the last 60 days?" A dealer who won't answer that question is telling you the answer is "less than what I'm quoting you." A dealer who does answer is telling you the truth or lying — and either way, you have leverage.

5. Apply the Walk-Away Test

Set a walk-away price before you walk in. Write it down. If the dealer will not meet it, leave. There is another unit at another dealer. This is the single most powerful move a buyer has.
