Buying used heavy equipment — excavators, skid steers, bulldozers, forklifts, or loaders — is one of the highest-stakes purchases in any industry. A bad buy can cost you tens of thousands in repairs and downtime. Here is how to protect yourself before you commit.
Hours Are Everything
Heavy equipment is valued primarily by engine hours. A machine with 5,000 hours is in a completely different category than one with 800 hours, even if they look similar. Always ask for the hour meter reading and verify it matches the service records. Rolled-back hour meters do happen.
Get the Service and Maintenance Records
Reputable sellers keep records. If someone cannot produce oil change history, filter replacements, and any major repair documentation, that is a red flag. Well-maintained equipment gets serviced every 250 to 500 hours depending on the machine. No records means no history.
Inspect the Undercarriage on Track Machines
On excavators and dozers the undercarriage — tracks, rollers, idlers, and sprockets — is the most expensive wear item on the machine. Replacement can run $10,000 to $30,000 or more. Check track tension, look for cracked or missing track pads, and inspect the rollers for leaking seals.
Check All Hydraulics
Cycle every hydraulic function — boom, bucket, blade, or forks depending on the machine. Watch for slow movement, jerky operation, or visible leaks at any cylinder or hose connection. Hydraulic repairs are expensive and slow if parts need to be ordered.
Look at the Cab and Controls
A destroyed cab with broken gauges, missing safety features, or inoperable controls is a negotiating point at minimum and a liability at worst. Check that all warning lights function, the ROPS or FOPS structure is intact, and the seat belt and safety systems are working.
Know What It Is Worth Before You Negotiate
Heavy equipment pricing varies enormously by region, condition, and current demand. Sellers in high-demand markets price aggressively.
