Most RV buyers only buy one or two RVs in their entire life. Dealers sell thousands. That imbalance is where the money is made. Here are the tactics you almost certainly won't recognize until it is too late — and how to counter each one.
1. The Monthly Payment Frame
The salesperson asks "What monthly payment are you comfortable with?" instead of talking price. This lets them stretch the loan term to 15, 18, even 20 years and hide $15,000+ of extra interest in a "comfortable payment." Counter: Only negotiate the OTD purchase price and let financing be a separate conversation.
2. The "Dealer Prep" Ghost Fee
A $1,200–$3,500 fee for tasks the manufacturer already paid to have completed. It is pure margin recovery. Counter: Ask for it removed. If they say "everyone pays it," ask what specific labor is included and challenge each line.
3. The Bloated Trade-In
They offer you $18,000 for your trade — $4,000 above book. Then they quietly raise the new unit price by $6,000. You feel great. You lost $2,000. Counter: Negotiate the purchase price to final OTD before mentioning your trade-in.
4. Extended Warranties and F&I Products
The finance office is where dealers make 30–50% of their per-unit profit. Tire and wheel, GAP, extended warranty, paint protection, roof sealant plan — most are marked up 200–400%. Counter: Say "no" to everything in F&I. If you want a warranty, buy it from a third-party provider for half the price.
5. "This Unit Is Sold By End of Day"
Almost never true. Manufactured urgency is a closing script — not a real timeline. Counter: Assume it is a bluff. If it turns out to be true, another one exists at another dealer.
6. Rebate and Incentive Withholding
Manufacturer rebates, brand loyalty incentives, military discounts, first-time buyer programs — dealers often "forget" to mention them. Counter: Ask directly: "What manufacturer rebates or programs are active right now on this brand?" Then verify on the manufacturer's website.
7. The Signed-Then-Changed Deal
The most damaging tactic. You agree on a number, you sign paperwork, and somewhere in the stack the numbers are different than what you agreed to. Counter: Read every line of every document. Never sign in a rush. Take the paperwork home if you need to.
